The first ferry service to the North Shore commenced in this year.

1862
The Herald was first published in premises on Queen Street near Durham Street East. In 1963 the Herald moved to premises on Wyndham Street.

1864
The Waikato War ended and Farmers moved back to their land, this caused trade to slump and houses to become vacant. At the same time the withdrawal of the Military from the Barracks and then moving the seat of Government in 1965 to Wellington aggravated the situation.
