  1875
The stonewalls of the Barracks were demolished between 1873 & 1875 as the Maori were no longer seen as a threat to the city. A small section of this wall still stands today in the University of Auckland grounds.

1884
August 11th The first horse drawn Trams were put into service. They went from the Waitemata Hotel near Queen Street to the Ponsonby Reservoir and cost 3 pence.

1885
June 4th
- the foundation stone of the Library and Art Gallery was laid. The Library opened on 26th May 1887 and the Gallery on the 17th February 1988.

1888
The Custom House was built and opened in 1889
