The 1950's saw the midpoint of the 20th Century arrive. World War
two was over and the baby boom had began. The 1950's were a decade
of positive feelings.
1950
Auckland played host to the British Empire Games. Held at Eden Park it was attended by 290,000 people. Local gold-medal winners included Yvette Williams in the long jump.
1953
The first Royal vist of her majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to
this country. 1954 New Zealand's first Grand Prix took place at Admore, Auckland and was watched by a crowd of 70,000. The first exhibition of abstract art in a public gallery was shown at the Auckland City Art Gallery.
1955
The Farmer's Trading Company opened New Zealand,s first multi-storey car park in Auckland.It accommodates 500 cars on six levels.
1956
January 27 The foundation for the Habour Bridge is laid.
December 29 The last public tram ran in Auckland. The tracks were ripped up, Buses had won the day.
1958
The first supermarket was opened in Auckland by Mr Tom Ah Chee. The supermarket was Foodtown. The crowds were so big that the radio had to appeal to people to vist the next day.
The AMP building designed by Thorpe, Culter, Pickmore and Douglas was introduced to the Cityscape of Queen Street.
1959
May 30th The Auckland Harbour bridge is opened 50,000 people walk through the toll booths and a Piper flies under the bridge. |
