| HISTORY The Aotea Centre was opened in 1988, having been in the planning since the 1970's. Designed by the Auckland City Council department of Works, D.S Stubbs: Director of Works, R.Parker: Project Architect, and M.McQuillan: Project Manager, it cost around $30 million dollars to design and build. The Aotea Centre was built with the intent of providing a cultural centre for New Zealand, a place for New Zealand Performers to call home and a venue worthy of overseas artists. A centre for entertainment, culture, and conferences, comparable to the best in the world. ARCHITECTURE The Aotea Centre houses a theatre for 2300 people, a convention hall for 1000 people, a 250 seat restaurant, a lounge bar and extensive foyers that provide dramatic locations for exhibitions and entertainment. ART WORKS Within Aotea Square, in front of the Aotea Centre is the sculpture MOUNTAIN FOUNTAIN(82,000). Completed in 1981, it was created by the Mt Eden sculptor Terry Stringer. |
